Abstract

The Motivational Interviewing (MI) counseling approach has emerged as an effective intervention strategy for reducing aggressive behavior associated with online gaming addiction among students. This article aims to examine the role and effectiveness of MI techniques in addressing aggression in students struggling with digital game dependency. Through a comprehensive review of recent scholarly literature, this study explores the correlation between gaming addiction and aggressive tendencies, and how MI—by strengthening intrinsic motivation and resolving ambivalence—can serve as a practical strategy within school guidance and counseling contexts. The findings indicate that MI contributes significantly to helping students reflect on their behavior, regulate emotions adaptively, and commit to behavioral change. Theoretical and practical implications are presented as strategic references for counselors in managing digital addiction issues through a humanistic and evidence-based approach.
