Abstract

The revitalization of regional languages faces increasing challenges due to globalization and the dominance of national and foreign languages in digital communication. However, the rapid growth of social media has created new opportunities for preserving and promoting regional languages through broader and more interactive digital content. This study aims to examine the role of social media in regional language revitalization using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The literature search followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines with predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Five primary studies published between 2025 and 2026 were selected and analyzed through thematic synthesis. The findings indicate that platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and digital news media function as spaces for communication, learning, documentation, and dissemination of regional languages. Social media enhances community participation, expands language use, strengthens cultural identity, and encourages youth engagement. Nevertheless, its effectiveness remains constrained by the low prestige of regional languages, limited digital content, and the need for stronger collaboration among governments, educational institutions, language communities, and content creators to establish a sustainable digital language ecosystem.
